Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has revoked the charitable status of ten Jewish Canadian charities since the summer of 2024, based on multiple violations of Canadian law including Israeli military support. Read more.

Dogged work by several Canadian NGOs including Independent Jewish Voices Canada and Just Peace Advocates has led to the revocation of the charity status of ten Israeli oriented NGO’s in the last 24 months. Technical reasons for the revocations included “failing to operate exclusively for charitable purposes” and “not keeping adequat financial records”.

For many years those technical reasons had hidden the real purposes of these organizations – to help Israel and in particular the Israeli military.

The first of those revocatons came in August 2024 when CRA disallowed the Jewish National Fund of Canada, arguably the largest and most public of the pro-Israel lobby groups.

Since then 9 others have had their charitable status lifted.

• Canadian Zionist Cultural Association (CZCA) (Revoked Feb. 21, 2026)
• Canada Charity Partners (CCP) (Revoked Feb. 21, 2026)

According to Canadian Jewish News, The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked Canadian Zionist Cultural Association (CZCA)’s charitable status because its fundraising efforts were supporting the Israeli military. Following an audit of CZCA’s activities, CRA concluded that the charity maintained a “significant relationship” with the Association for the Soldiers of Israel – Canada.

The regulator cited a decade-plus of co-hosted fundraising galas, between 2013 and 2024, where proceeds were explicitly directed toward the “needs of the Soldiers of Israel,” activities which CRA characterized as an “unstated collateral non-charitable purpose” by “increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of a foreign armed force.”

Canadian Jewish charities have come under increased scrutiny from groups opposing Canadian charitable support linked to Israel. Critics include Just Peace Advocates and Independent Jewish Voices (Canada), which support boycott, divestments and sanctions against Israel, and whose members organized a petition and a formal complaint to CRA to investigate CZCA.

According to a survey in the mid 1990’s there were over 300 registered Canadian charities with ties to israel. Some notable examples include: United Israel Appeal of Canada Inc., which has received over $23 million in donations, The Canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute of Science, with donations totaling over $21 million and the Birthright Israel Foundation of Canada, supporting young Jewish adults’ trips to Israel.

Estimating the annual financial contribution to Israel from Canadian charitable organizations is challenging, but available data suggests it’s substantial. In 2023, Canadian charities sent over $271 million directly to Israeli intermediaries, with an additional $100 million going to Israeli qualified donees, such as universities.

CRA has a lot more work to do.
