For 50 years, the US superpower has backed Israel against the Palestinians. Now another global power – China – is cautiously getting involved. What will that mean?

China’s President Xi Jin Ping met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas when they were both in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in early December for a China-Arab summit. China has diplomatic relations with both Israel and Palestine and it backs a 2 state solution. But it has recently become more openly supportive of the national aspirations of the Palestinian people and critical of some of Israel’s actions. This must be unsettling for Israel’s American patron. Joint delegation of Canadian human rights organizations reports on its recent trip to Israel/Palestine: “the situation is getting worse”

During a 17 day trip in October/November, a delegation from three different Canadian human rights organizations travelled the length and breadth of Israel/Palestine. Here Philip Sherwood, (UNJPPI), Peter Larson (OFIP) and Michael Bueckert (CJPME) meet over dinner in Nazareth with Haneen Zoabi, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and a former member of the Knesset. Antisemitic comments cause controversy and raise fears in USA and Canada

Sportswear giant Adidas announced that it was dropping its sponsorship of controversial rapper Kanye West (also known as “Ye”) following his repeated antisemitic slurs. The move comes a few weeks after another scandal here in Canada over alleged vicious antisemitic slurs by a well known Palestinian human rights activist. Both cases are very harmful to the cause of human rights for Palestinians. Read more…

Is a “two state solution” still possible? Liberal Zionists struggle to keep the dream of a jewish state alive against increasing odds
