Is Canada Day also our own “Nakba Day”?

The orange t-shirt has become the symbol of residential school survivors. The recent grisly discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves of indigenous children who had been inmates at residential schools has provoked a somber reflection in Canada about the impact of our colonial history. Some have proposed that Canada Day be cancelled altogether. Others have urged using the moment to think about truth and reconciliation. Is Canada Day also our own “Nakba Day”? Read more….

Liberals announce an “emergency summit” on anti-Semitism. Why? Is there really an anti-Semitism crisis in Canada?

Former Liberal cabinet minister Irwin Cotler has joined with the Israel lobby to pressure the Trudeau government to hold an urgent summit to deal with what he calls an anti-Semitism crisis. What has prompted this? Is there really a “crisis” of anti-Semitism in Canada? Or is the real crisis for Cotler, CIJA and Bnai Brith the feeling that more and more Canadians are becoming openly critical of Israel. Read more….

Is the international consensus on a “Two State solution” starting to break down?

A recent edition of the internationally renowned magazine “The Economist” devoted its front page, an editorial, and a long article to analysing the Israel/Palestine situation. Its conclusion: the peace process is “hopeless” and the chances for a two state solution are diminishingly small. “Is it possible to love Israel and still feel solidarity with Palestinians?”, asks Canadian professor

Carleton University professor Mira Sucharov has raised a challenging question for Jews who believe strongly in equality and human rights for Palestinians. Is it possible, she asks to “love” Israel and be committed to Palestinian solidarity at the same time? Though directed at Jews, her question also challenges Palestinians to imagine a new and different Israel/Palestine where Jews and Palestinians can live together in equality. Read more….

“Israel has launched an unprecedented wave of repression against own Palestinian citizens” according to Mossawa Centre in Haifa

As soon as the truce was signed with Hamas, Israel launched an unprecedented wave of repression across Israel, targeting its Palestinian citizens who had been demonstrating in support of those facing expulsions at Sheikh Jarrah or against the bombing of Gaza. Over 2000 have been arrested, according to Suha Mousa, Executive Director of Mossawa, the Advocacy Centre for Palestinian citizens of Israel. Read more and watch the interview…..
