Former US President Jimmy Carter braved a storm of controversy when he came out in 2006 with his book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid”. While other major figures including Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu had made the same allegation, Carter was the first major western figure to adopt that terminology. Widespread support for torture of Palestinians in detention – are Israel’s real values really the same as ours?

Israel claims to be a democracy that shares Canadian concerns for human rights, rule of law and tolerance. But information coming out of Israel on widespread public support for torture, rape and even murder of Palestinian prisoners, makes it difficult to find any “shared values”. Read more….

“A textbook case of genocide the UN is powerless to stop” – resignation letter of senior UN official

Craig Mokiber resigned from his senior position at the UN on October 30th. In a final letter to his boss, Volker Turk, High Commissioner for Human Rights, he praised the UN’s work in human rights in other conflicts, but expressed anger and frustration over its inability to offer the same protection to Palestinians. He offered a radical 10 point program on what the UN and the international community needs to do. Read more…

Jewish Group launches Canada-wide education campaign on Israeli apartheid

On Sunday, March 20th, Independent Jewish Voices Canada launched a campaign to raise awareness of, and urge Canadian action against, Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.
