Canada is the world’s third largest exporter of drones, after Israel and the USA. Israeli drones, including some with Canadian technology, now regularly fly over Gaza day and night. Their constant buzzing is a reminder to everyone that the Israeli military is watching. Armed drones have the ability to assassinate at will. Nobody knows when or where they will attack. American/Israeli academic Gershon Shafir spoke on November 14th to a large crowd at the Jewish Community Centre in Ottawa. He was very critical of Israel’s seemingly unstoppable slide towards intolerance and right wing politics, but still held out hope for a 2 state solution. Professor Michael Lynk, of Western University Law school, is the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Many Canadians are confused and conflicted over the Israel/Palestine issue. They feel sorry for the Palestinians, but worry about security for Jews. A long waiting list for a six week adult education course at Carleton University this fall seems to show that many are concerned and want to understand more. English rock star Roger Waters starts a 6 city Canadian tour in Toronto on October 2nd. But the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is trying to develop opposition to the tour because of Waters’ very vocal criticism of Israel over the issue of human rights for Palestinians.
