Dr. Benny Morris (l.) and Dr. Ilan Pappé (r) are well-known Jewish Israeli historians who have dug carefully into Israel’s past. Morris is a proud Zionist. Pappé is opposed to Zionism.  Their research has led them to draw very different conclusions about the events surrounding the creation of the State of Israel in 1947/48.  An excellent series of probing interviews with each one has been prepared by Dr. Jordan Levine of Toronto. In November 1947 Canada voted at the UN in support of giving over 50% of historic Palestine to European Jews to allow them to create a new state after the horrible events of the Holocaust. But we paid scarce attention to the appalling consequences for the people who were already living there. But recently Canada has found a lamentably legalistic reason to undercut the ICC in its investigation of potential Israeli war crimes. As Holocaust Memorial day returns, a survey of Canadian Jews explores “Jewishness” and its relationship to the State of Israel

A recent survey of Canadian Jews by the Environics Institute shows the memory of the horrors of the Holocaust looms large in their attachment to the State of Israel. On Palestinian Prisoner Rights day, Canada appears to remain silent as COVID spreads among prisoners in Israeli jails

April 17th is Palestinian Prisoners’ Day. There are an estimated 4,520 Palestinian prisoners in crowded Israeli jails, including men, women and children as young as 14. In the face of well-founded concerns that COVID is spreading in its prisons, a global outcry is rising demanding Israel release Palestinian prisoners, particularly women and children and those held without charge under so-called “administrative detention”. So far, Canada, which claims to be a “friend of the Palestinian people” has not shown any interest. Read more…
