A legal case contesting the Liquor Control Board of Ontario’s right to market wine produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank as a “Product of Israel” was launched in 2017 by Winnipeg native David Kattenburg. These two Palestinian children died in a housefire in Hebron, in the Occupied West Bank after Israeli military prevented a Palestinian fire truck from crossing a checkpoint. Palestinian American Ali Abunimah told a capacity crowd at St. Paul University in Ottawa that Israel should be understood as a “settler-colonial” state, like Canada or South Africa. Abunimah believes that the only answer that would bring peace to the Israel/Palestine conflict is to recognize what has happened and move toward one democratic state with equal rights for all.
