Listening to Bruce Cockburn; thinking about Gaza

The Bruce Cockburn concert at the NAC in Ottawa last week was delicious. He played many of his best loved songs and lots of new ones too. A real treat. Will the City of Ottawa fly Israel’s flag on May 14th while it continues to commit genocide in Gaza?

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has announced that the City of Ottawa will raise the Israeli flag on May 14th to celebrate the creation of the State of Israel. It has done so since 2007. However, many people find this an insensitive and hurtful decision this year as Israel continues its murderous bombardment of Gaza. Read more....

Former PM Stephen Harper tries to reassure worried conservatives that Israel is waging a “just war”. It’s a difficult task.

Former Prime Minister Harper visited Israel in February. Before going, he wrote a long opinion piece in the National Post attempting to provide justification for Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza. It came in the wake of polls show an increasing number of conservatives are breaking ranks with Israel and joining the call for a “ceasefire’. Read more.

Is zionism a form of racism? Israel’s attack on Gaza reignites an old debate

On November 10th, 1975, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 3379, determining that “Zionism is a form of racism and racial discrimination“. After intense lobbying by the USA, it was revoked 16 years later by Resolution 46/86, adopted on 16 December 1991. But political developments in Israel and its brutal attack on Gaza have revived the discussion. Read more…

Open letter to Supreme Court Registrar Chantal Carbonneau: Are Canadians who support human rights for Palestinians welcome at Canada’s Supreme Court? or not?

According to an article in the Toronto Star, four Black activists were invited to the Supreme Court to talk about racism with some of the courts law clerks during Black History month. Then the activists were abruptly “disinvited” – apparently because they have posted articles in support of human rights for Palestinians. Read more.
