The Canadian military started leasing Israeli attack drones in 2017 for use in Afghanistan. It is now considering buying more. By all accounts, the Israeli drones are VERY effective. They should be, they have been “field tested” – including on Palestinian civilians. For years Palestinians have been sneaking across Israel’s “security barrier” risking arrest to find work, much like Mexican immigrants who try to slip into the USA. In the last few weeks, that trickle has become a flood. A CBC report paints it as a marvellous mixing, but it glosses over the underlying discrimination and injustice. Read a special guest column.

The Green Party of Canada will choose a new leader to replace longtime leader Elizabeth May on October 4th. Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) and Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) have analysed each of the nine leadership candidates on Middle East-related issues, awarding Dimitri Lascaris the best score. The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in East Jerusalem, and Yabous, a cultural centre, were raided by Israeli police in late July. Several directors were arrested and repeatedly interrogated. International law does not recognize Israel’s claim of sovereignty over East Jerusalem. Neither does Canadian policy. Other countries objected to the Israeli incursion. However, so far Canada has remained silent. Read more.

A July 8th article in the New York Times by Peter Beinart, a well known Jewish American intellectual, landed like a bombshell in the Jewish community around the world. Beinart, long a supporter of a 2 state solution, declared he no longer believed in the idea of a Jewish State.
