More churches call on Prime Minister to address situation in Israel/Palestine

At a recent joint assembly in Calgary, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada and the Anglican Church of Canada, affirmed a resolution calling for stronger action to address the deteriorating conditions in Israel and Palestine. They add their voices to the rising chorus of Christian opinion in Canada, including statements from the United Church of Canada, Mennonites, and others opposing systemic oppression of the Palestinians by Israel. As Israel announces 5700 new illegal housing units in West Bank – Canada expresses “grave concern” (but won’t actually “do” anything)

World leaders call for international community to consider “serious enforceable measures” to put pressure on Israel

Just as Canada undertakes a review of its own policy toward Israel/Palestine, Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, and Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary-General, have issued an urgent call to the whole international community to bring pressure on Israel. Is the new China-Palestine “strategic partnership” mere posturing or something more significant???

Mahmood Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority has just completed a four day state visit to China. “We are good friends and partners,” Chinese President Xi told Abbas. Is the two state solution dead? A thoughtful debate organized by the Middle East Study Group of the Canadian International Council

Recently the House of Commons Committee on Foreign Relations decided to undertake a review of Canada’s policy toward the Israel/Palestine question. Canada has made the idea of a “two state solution” a cornerstone of its policy. At the invitation of the Canadian International Council, Jon Allen former Canadian ambassador to Israel and Peter Larson, Chair of the Ottawa Forum on Israel Palestine expressed opposite views on whether a “two state solution” is still possible.
