Palestinian American Ali Abunimah told a capacity crowd at St. Paul University in Ottawa that Israel should be understood as a “settler-colonial” state, like Canada or South Africa. Abunimah believes that the only answer that would bring peace to the Israel/Palestine conflict is to recognize what has happened and move toward one democratic state with equal rights for all. Deborah Lyons, Canada’s Ambassador to Israel, graciously received our group at her official residence in Tel Aviv. Lyons spoke glowingly about Canadian trade with Israel. Well known Israeli novelist Amos Oz, widely respected as a man of letters, is dead of cancer at 79. Many Israeli (and North American) Jews saw Oz as a “peace activist” because of his strong stand against the occupation. But others note he remained a committed Zionist who supported Israel’s creation and its continued existence as a Jewish state to the detriment of the Palestinians. Read more….
