A million anguished voices cry out to us from Gaza – here is one of them

Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza for six days – a war crime in real time that the Canadian government ignores. My messages to friends stuck in the hell of Gaza have remained unanswered since Monday. Out of power? Running for their lives? Lying in the rubble of their bombed out apartment building or outside the overcrowded Shifa hospital hoping to be treated? Or perhaps worse…? I fear to know the answer. If Israel kills every single Hamas fighter, (and massacres thousands of other Palestinians in Gaza as well) will that make Israelis any safer?

In retaliation for Hamas’ surprising breakout and attack on Israel on the weekend, Israel has begun an intensive aerial bombardment which will be followed, according to the Israel general in charge of the operation, by a massive attack by land, sea and air against the enclosed Gaza strip. Thousands trapped in that area will certainly die. It is the fifth major Israeli assault on Gaza in a generation. Will this one make Israelis any safer? Read more.

“The Wall Between, or – What Jews and Palestinians don’t want to know about each other” – A public discussion in Ottawa on October 18

Why do Canadian Jews fear Palestinians? Why do Canadian Palestinians fear Jews? Why cant they get along? Palestinian Raja Khouri (left) and Jewish Jeffrey Wilkinson (right) have explored these questions in a new book called “The Wall Between”. The 2023 session of the UN General Assembly has begun. Will it harshly criticize Israel again this year? Why is the UN so obsessed with Israel anyway?

Last year, as in many years before, Israel faced repeated criticisms in the UN General Assembly. On a resolution condemning its occupation of Palestinian territory, (above) one hundred and twenty countries voted against Israel. Only 8 countries (including Canada and the USA) defended it. “Israeli Apartheid” entering Canadian consciousness: Ekos Survey

More than one-quarter of all Canadians feel that Israel is practicing a regime “similar to apartheid” according to a recent poll by Ekos Research Associates. It also seems that younger Canadians are even more willing to use the “apartheid” label than are their babyboomer seniors.
