One hundred years ago this month, after decades of anti-Jewish pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe, British Foreign Secretary Lord Arthur Balfour promised Jews that Britain would help them create a homeland in Palestine.
That set in motion events which have caused trouble in the Middle East ever since.
Was Balfour’s idea a good one, or not? The First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa is organizing a film and discussion to mark the 100th anniversary.

Since the start of his cross-Canada musical tour, rock star Roger Waters has been attacked by various pro-Israel organizations for his steadfast support for human rights for Palestinians. Many Canadians are confused and conflicted over the Israel/Palestine issue. They feel sorry for the Palestinians, but worry about security for Jews. A long waiting list for a six week adult education course at Carleton University this fall seems to show that many are concerned and want to understand more.
